One of the simplest ways to check tread depth only requires a penny and a few minutes of your time. Tire tread depth is measured in 32nds of an inch. The tread depth of new tires is typically 10/32 inch or 11/32 inch, although some truck, SUV and winter tires have deeper tread depths.
Most professionals agree that tires should be replaced by the time they reach 2/32 inch and many states even require that tires be replaced at that depth. The penny test is a quick and easy way to check if the tread has reached the 2/32 inch threshold.
Place a penny between the the raised portion of tread that runs around the tire. Position the penny so that Lincoln’s head is pointing down into the tread. If the top of his head disappears between the tread, it's greater than 2/32 inch. If Lincoln's entire head can be seen, the tires should be replaced because the tread is no longer deep enough It's important to check at a number of different places on the tire. The tire should be replaced if any portion of tread is less than 2/32 inch deep. Any uneven wear should be investigated by a mechanic to determine the cause and make the required repair to prevent the new tires from uneven wear as well.
Legal doesn't mean optimal
When performed correctly, the penny test is a reasonable way to measure 2/32 inch tread depth. However, just because it's legal, does not mean it's a tread depth sufficient enough to perform well on the road, especially when rain or snow affect the surface.
