Running out of oil is a costly and damaging disaster for a car. If the oil warning light on your dashboard ever comes on while you are driving, stop instantly and switch off the engine then call for assistance. If you continue to drive after the light has come on, you may wreck the engine.
Checking the oil level is a quick, easy job that is recommended to be done at every other gas fill-up. All you’ll need is a rag or paper towel and your vehicle’s owner’s manual to reference in case you have questions.
Before checking the oil, ensure that the vehicle is on level ground and that the engine has been off just long enough to cool down so you don't get burned. With the vehicle turned off, lift the hood and secure it in the raised position. Locate the oil dipstick and pull it out from the engine. Wipe the dipstick clean with an old rag or paper towel, then slide it back in the tube. Pull the dipstick out again and check the oil level using the marks on the dipstick. The oil should be between the maximum and minimum marks. If the level is too low, you’ll need to add additional oil.
Make sure to check the owner’s manual to ensure you use the specific grade of oil recommended for your vehicle. It will be written in a form similar to 0W-20 or 5W-30. You can buy oil by the quart at any service station or auto parts store and it's often available at grocery stores and department stores as well. You shouldn't need to add more than a quart unless there is a serious problem, but buying a couple quarts might save you a trip back to get more.
To add the oil, remove the oil filler cap, usually located on top of the engine. The oil cap is often marked with an oil symbol, but if there’s any doubt, check the vehicle’s manual. Use a funnel if you have one available to avoid spilling oil and slowly pour in about half the quart. Wait a couple minutes before checking the level on the dipstick again. If the level is still below the minimum mark, add the rest of the quart. When you are sure the oil level is above the minimum amount needed, screw the oil cap back on the engine before lowering the hood and be sure the hood latches securely. Lastly, check the oil pressure gauge after you start the vehicle to ensure it's within the appropriate range.
